Keratin Treatment Aftercare: The First 72 Hours and Beyond

Elena, owner and stylist at Elleven Hair StudioBy Elena

Quick Answer: The first 72 hours after a keratin treatment are the most important — keep hair straight, dry, and untouched (no ponytails, clips, or sweat) while it fully bonds. After that window, switch to sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, since sulfates are the fastest way to strip the treatment out early. With the right routine, most treatments hold up for two to six months.

The keratin smoothing treatment itself is only half the equation — the aftercare in the days right after decides how long the results actually last. Most of the “my keratin treatment didn’t work” stories I hear trace back to the first 72 hours, not the treatment itself.

The first 72 hours matter more than anything after

Your hair needs time to fully bond with the treatment, and that means keeping it straight and untouched. No ponytails, no clips or headbands, no tucking behind your ears, no sleeping with it pushed to one side. Anything that creates a bend or crease while the treatment is setting can leave a permanent kink in that spot.

  • Skip washing for at least 3 days (I’ll confirm the exact timing for your formula)
  • Avoid sweat, humidity, and rain — an umbrella is worth carrying
  • Keep it down and straight, even while sleeping
  • No hair ties, bobby pins, or headbands

Choosing the right shampoo

Once you’re past the initial window, switch to a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Sulfates strip the treatment out of your hair faster than almost anything else, and it’s the single easiest way to shorten your results without realizing it. The smoothing shampoo, conditioner and leave-in I recommend are on my keratin aftercare and products page; I keep them on the shelf or order them for you.

Keratin Treatment Aftercare That Makes It Last

With the right aftercare, most keratin treatments hold up beautifully for two to six months. Heat styling won’t undo the treatment, but going lighter on it means less strain on your hair overall. When you start noticing more frizz creeping back in around the three-month mark, that’s usually a good sign it’s time to think about rebooking — and if you’re also planning a color refresh, it’s worth reading up on which service to book first so neither result gets shortchanged.

What About Workouts and Swimming in the First Week

Sweat and swimming are the two things clients most often ask about, and both need real caution in that first week. A hard workout that leaves hair damp with sweat can create the same bend-and-crease risk as sleeping on it wrong, so keeping workouts lighter (or hair fully dry and protected) for those first few days matters more than people expect. Chlorine and salt water are even harsher — they can interfere with the treatment before it’s had a chance to fully set. If you can’t skip the pool or the gym entirely, at minimum keep hair tied up loosely and rinse it with fresh water as soon as you’re done, then treat it gently until you’re past the initial bonding window.
